Opening a Case
SOP for creating a new legal matter from the Cases list and New Case form in the VerityLaw dashboard.
Opening a Case
This page shows you how to create a new case from the current Cases workflow in VerityLaw.
Product: VerityLaw
Module: Cases
Role: Administrator, case manager, legal operator
Difficulty: Beginner
Time: 5 to 10 minutes
Last Updated: 2026-03-10
Version: Current repo baseline
Before You Start
- Sign in to the dashboard.
- Make sure the client organisation already exists.
- Have the matter title, type, priority, and deadline ready if those details are known.
What is this task?
This task creates a legal case record. In the current dashboard, the create flow is a full form that returns you to the Cases list after save.
When do you use this?
Use this task when a client already exists and you need to register a new legal matter for that client. Do not use it to create the organisation itself.
Where do you find it?
Start from: /dashboard/cases
Create route: /dashboard/cases/new
Button on list page: New Case
Review route after save: /dashboard/cases
How to open the case
- Open
/dashboard/cases. - Click New Case.
- In Client Organisation, choose the correct client.
- In Case Type, choose the matter type.
- Enter a Title.
- Add a Description if you need more context on the record.
- Set Priority. The form starts at
medium. - Choose an Assigned Lawyer if one is available.
- Set a Deadline if the matter already has one.
- Click Create Case.
- Wait for the page to return you to
/dashboard/cases. - Confirm the new matter appears in the Cases table.
What should you verify on the list page?
The current Cases page is the follow-up review screen. Confirm the new row shows the right:
- Reference
- Client
- Type
- Status
- Priority
- Lawyer
- Deadline
The system generates the case reference automatically when the case is created.
What if something looks wrong?
"The client I need is not in the Client Organisation list"
Why this happens: The case form only offers organisations that already exist.
Fix: Stop here and follow Creating a Client, then return to the case form.
"The Assigned Lawyer list is empty or missing someone"
Why this happens: The select list is populated from active users in lawyer-style roles, not from every user record.
Fix: Confirm the user exists and has the right role before trying again. If the person still cannot be selected, check Creating a User.
